KETAPANG, WEST KALIMANTAN — Sustainable community development across forestry concessions depends on expanding the technical capabilities and income sources of rural households. To support agricultural diversification, PT Mayawana Persada organized an intensive broiler poultry farming workshop for local agricultural collectives in Kualan Hilir Village, Simpang Hulu District, Ketapang Regency.
Linda, Assistant for Community Empowerment around Concessions at PT Mayawana Persada, explained that the training specifically targets local farmers registered under the Ministry of Agriculture's Agriculture Extension Management Information System (Simluhtan).
"Our goal is to equip local farming collectives with certified poultry husbandry methods. We want to help farmers move beyond rudimentary trial-and-error techniques and adopt standardized, productive poultry management practices," Linda stated.
Navigating Critical Brooding Stages and Nutritional Balance
The workshop placed particular focus on the delicate brooding phase—the initial 0 to 7 days of a chick's life cycle—which directly determines overall flock viability.
"Field experience shows that the first week is the most vulnerable window in broiler cultivation. Through these sessions, farmers learn to manage ambient temperatures, ensure proper coop airflow, and apply strict feeding schedules so the flock grows vigorously in subsequent stages," Linda explained.
Partnering with Regional Agricultural Authorities
The session was delivered in partnership with Dominiko, a certified Livestock Seed and Breed Inspector from the Ketapang Regency Agriculture, Livestock, and Plantation Agency. Dominiko commended the company's direct engagement with rural agricultural groups.
"We want these community-assisted farmer groups to gradually achieve commercial independence without ongoing dependency on external input subsidies. This training directly aligns with our shared vision of cultivating self-reliant, prosperous rural communities," Dominiko said.
Upgrading Local Farming Practices
For local smallholders, the training offered practical insights to modernize traditional practices. Sesilia Setiana, a representative from the Cahaya Mitra Farmer Group, welcomed the technical guidance.
"Previously, we raised chickens purely by trial and error using traditional methods. This training has given us a clear understanding of proper hygiene, vaccination schedules, and standardized brooding techniques," Sesilia shared.
Anita Theresia Fransiska from the Setontong Jaya Jemar Farmer Group echoed this view, noting that the workshop highlighted necessary improvements to existing facilities.
"We realized that our traditional coop structures need better ventilation and spacing to meet health and production standards. We appreciate this partnership and look forward to continued collaboration in upgrading coop layouts and feeding systems," Anita added.
